Rio Caino: the open-air museum between history, nature and legends
Located about 25 km from Lake Idro, Rio Caino is an ideal destination for those who wish to enjoy an authentic experience surrounded by nature, traditions and stories from the past.
This charming circular trail of approximately 4 km, situated between 450 and 750 metres above sea level, is a true open-air museum immersed in the forests of the Chiese Valley. Along the route, visitors encounter numerous traces of rural life from centuries ago: ancient forges, mills and structures linked to traditional crafts tell the story of the deep connection between people and nature.
The trail is enriched by a touch of magic thanks to the Witch’s Garden (Orto della Strega), associated with Brigida, a herbalist who lived during the 15th century. Her story continues to fascinate visitors and curious travellers alike.
Historical landmarks are also part of the experience, including the trenches of the First World War. Several restored structures can also be admired, such as the lime kiln, the charcoal kiln, the roccolo (traditional bird-catching structure) and the historic mountain hut (malga), the panoramic final stop of the excursion.
