San Lorenzo Church: a Hike Through Nature, History and Stunning Views
Nestled in the municipality of Borgochiese, high above the valley and surrounded by nature, the small Church of San Lorenzo looks as if it has stepped straight out of a fairy tale. Perched on a mountain top, it is a wonderful destination for families, hikers and photography enthusiasts looking to combine beautiful scenery with local history.
The hike takes approximately one hour and is suitable for both adults and children. Along the way, visitors can enjoy peaceful woodland trails, scenic viewpoints and plenty of opportunities for photography. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, as proper footwear is essential when exploring mountain paths.
A convenient starting point is the Bicigrill in Località Bersaglio, 38083 Condino (Borgo Chiese). Behind the Bicigrill, a stream flows beneath a small bridge. After crossing the bridge, you will find the first signpost directing you toward the Church of San Lorenzo. Its location along the cycle path makes it an easy and recognizable starting point for the walk.
As you follow the trail, you will encounter several historical remains from the First World War. One of the highlights is an old artillery position where cannons were once stationed. Visitors can enter the structure and explore this fascinating reminder of the area’s military past.
The first section of the trail includes a few steeper stretches, but after about ten minutes the path becomes gentler and easier to walk. Further along, you will reach a small junction marked by a mountain stream and a traditional water basin carved from a tree trunk. Here, keep left and continue along the higher trail toward the summit.
From this point, the church can be reached in around ten minutes. Just before arriving, you will pass an old First World War lookout post that was once connected to the trenches surrounding the church. Several of these historic trenches are still visible today and can be explored, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s past.
At the top, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views of the valley and the surrounding mountains. Near the church there is a fountain with fresh drinking water, perfect for refilling your water bottle before heading back. The peaceful setting makes it an ideal place for a picnic or a relaxing break, while children will enjoy exploring the open surroundings and historical remains.
For the return journey, you can follow a pleasant circular route. From the junction near the stream, continue alongside the water basin, cross a bridge and follow the descending trail toward the cycle path. From there, it is just a short walk back to the Bicigrill, allowing you to complete the excursion without retracing the same path.
