Pieve Santa Maria Assunta

Santa Maria Assunta Church in Condino

A short distance from the centre of Condino stands the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most important historical and religious monuments in the Chiese Valley. This remarkable site preserves more than 800 years of history, art and traditions.

The first recorded mention of the church dates back to 1192. Over the centuries, the building was expanded, restored and enriched by numerous artists. Between 1495 and 1505, it was almost entirely rebuilt by master builder Albertino Comanedi from Osteno, giving it much of the appearance it retains today.

Inside, visitors can admire beautiful frescoes, historic altars and valuable religious artworks. More than thirty artists contributed to the decoration of the church over the centuries, making it one of the most important cultural treasures of the valley.

The church was not only a place of worship. For centuries, it served as the religious and administrative centre of a vast area that included several communities throughout the Chiese Valley. Important meetings and decisions that shaped local life took place here.

Despite fires and other damage suffered throughout its long history, the church has been carefully restored. Today, it shines once again in its former splendour and is a must-visit destination for anyone wishing to discover the rich heritage of the region.
