A short distance from the calm waters of Lake Idro lie two charming villages: stone houses, atmospheric streets, and traditions that are still very much alive. These are Bondone and Bagolino, both part of the Borghi più belli d’Italia, each showcasing in its own way the charm of this border region.
Bondone: a small authentic village above Lake Idro
Bondone is a highly characteristic village in the southern part of Trentino, set in a panoramic position above Lake Idro.
The historic center is compact and peaceful, with stone houses, narrow streets, and viewpoints that suddenly open onto the lake. It’s the ideal place for those looking for tranquility, authenticity, and beautiful landscapes.
In summer, the liveliest time is the second weekend of August (8 – 9 August 2026), when Bondone in Strada takes place.
During this event, the village turns into an open-air stage:
- street performers from Italy and abroad
- shows featuring theatre, music, and juggling
- performances set among alleys, squares, and historic courtyards
Bondone is historically linked to charcoal burners, known as the Carbonér: for centuries, locals produced charcoal in the surrounding forests, a demanding activity that deeply shaped the village’s culture and identity.
During the Christmas period, the village takes on a completely different atmosphere thanks to the many nativity scenes displayed throughout the center. Handmade creations appear in alleys, courtyards, and hidden corners of the village.
A true winter spectacle that makes a visit even more special.
A short distance from the village lies Castel San Giovanni, a fort perched high above the lake.
It’s easy to reach and the view from the top is absolutely worth it.
Bondone is worth visiting all year round: lively and creative in summer, peaceful and atmospheric in winter.
Bagolino: a historic village of traditions, art and flavors
Bagolino is a fascinating village near Lake Idro, known for its unique layout and strong traditions.
The historic center is a true maze of narrow streets, arches, and stairways winding between stone houses, creating an authentic and timeless atmosphere. As you walk through the village, you can feel a strong identity still deeply connected to its history and mountain lifestyle.
One of the main highlights is the impressive Chiesa di San Giorgio, which towers over the village and houses valuable works of art inside. A must-visit to fully appreciate Bagolino’s cultural importance.
The most spectacular time to visit is during the famous Carnevale di Bagolino, considered one of the most authentic and unique carnivals in Italy:
- richly decorated traditional costumes
- live traditional music
- dances that bring the entire village to life
This is not an event created for tourists, but a tradition that is still genuinely lived by the local community.
Alongside its cultural heritage, Bagolino is also a destination for food lovers. This is where the well-known Bagòss is produced, a cheese with a strong and distinctive flavor, still made using traditional methods.
In winter, the village reveals a different charm: snow, quiet surroundings, and alpine architecture create a cozy and atmospheric setting, perfect for those seeking an authentic experience away from the crowds.
Bagolino is ideal for a more in-depth visit, perhaps combined with a culinary stop or a day immersed in nature.
Tip from Visit Lake Idro
