A scenic route through Lake Idro, Lake Valvestino, Lake Garda and Lake Ledro
If you’re spending your holiday at Lake Idro, this is one of the most beautiful scenic day trips you can take. This circular route of approximately 150 km (93 miles) takes you to four unique lakes, each with its own charm. From the peaceful atmosphere of Lake Idro and the unspoiled nature of the Valvestino Valley to the Mediterranean ambiance of Lake Garda and the tranquil beauty of Lake Ledro.
The route is ideal for cars, motorcycles and bicycles, offering breathtaking views, charming villages and some of the most spectacular mountain roads in Northern Italy.
From Lake Idro to Lake Valvestino
Start your journey from Lake Idro and drive to the village of Idro. Follow the signs towards Capovalle via the SP58. The road gradually climbs through forests while offering increasingly beautiful views over the lake, eventually reaching the mountain village of Capovalle, located at over 900 metres above sea level.
Drive through the village and continue following the signs for Valvestino. The SP58 continues for a few more kilometres before reaching the junction where the SP9 begins, the scenic road that winds through the Valvestino Valley.
From here, the landscape changes dramatically. The road meanders through forests, deep gorges and towering cliffs, passing tunnels carved into the rock, panoramic bridges and spectacular viewpoints overlooking Lake Valvestino. Its emerald-green waters and untouched surroundings make this one of the most impressive stretches of the entire tour. Along the way, you’ll find several viewpoints where you can stop to admire the scenery and capture unforgettable photos.
From Lake Valvestino to Lake Garda
Continue along the SP9 until you reach Gargnano, one of the most charming villages on the western shore of Lake Garda.
From here, follow the SS45bis Gardesana Occidentale north. The road hugs the shoreline and passes through stunning scenery before arriving in Limone sul Garda, famous for its picturesque historic centre, lakeside promenade and centuries-old lemon groves.
Continue to Riva del Garda, a lively town at the northern end of Lake Garda, surrounded by the mountains of Trentino. Take some time to stroll through the historic centre, walk along the harbour or relax at one of the many cafés with a lake view.
From Lake Garda to Lake Ledro
From Riva del Garda, follow the SS240 towards the Ledro Valley.
After approximately 20 minutes, you’ll arrive at Lake Ledro, considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Trentino thanks to its crystal-clear waters and stunning natural surroundings. It’s the perfect place for a relaxing walk, a break by the lake or lunch with a view.
If you’re interested in history, don’t miss the Lake Ledro Pile Dwelling Museum in Molina di Ledro, where you can explore a reconstructed Bronze Age settlement that forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Return to Lake Idro
To complete the circular route, continue along the SS240 towards Storo. Then take the SS237 del Caffaro, which will bring you back to Lake Idro.
On the way back, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the mountains of the Valle del Chiese, bringing an unforgettable day of discovery to a perfect close.
Our recommendation
To make the most of this tour, we recommend setting off early in the morning and allowing a full day to enjoy the route.
If possible, plan your trip between Monday and Friday. During the high season, traffic on the western shore of Lake Garda, especially between Gargnano, Limone sul Garda and Riva del Garda, can be very busy at weekends. On weekdays, you’ll enjoy quieter roads, easier parking and more time to explore each stop at your own pace.
